Ancient name of turquois stone is “Callais” The gemstone has been known by many names. Pliny the Elder referred to the mineral as Callais ( from Ancient Greek kallaic) and Aztecs knew it as chalchihuitl.
Callaïs is the name of a green stone used for making beads by western European cultures of the later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. It was described by Pliny the Elder (NH XXXVII.lvi.151) as being paler than lapis lazuli.
The word turquoise dates to the 17th century only and is derived from the French turquoisd meaning “Turkish” because the mineral was brought to Europe through Turkey, from mines in the Khorasa province of Persia
